Ned Rothenberg’s Alto Saxophone solo
Later in the program, Paul Dresher will be joining him on his invention, the Hurdy Grande. Concluding the program Ned and Paul be joined by composer Jay Cloid, who will digitally transform (in ways we can’t yet imagine) Ned’s and Paul’s live performance.
A longtime member of New York’s downtown music scene and collaborator with artists such as John Zorn, Elliot Sharp, Evan Parker, Marc Ribot, and Sainkho Namchylak, Ned brings a unique lyricism and sense of form to the idiom of radical extended instrumental techniques that is at the foundation of his immersive musical world.
This is a rare opportunity to hear Ned outside of NY and Europe (where he is often on tour).
“Woodwind/saxophone ace Ned Rothenberg has a formidable reputation as an innovator. Specifically, Rothenberg has been celebrated for his circular-breathing techniques, as well as his experiments with overtone manipulation and polyphony. He also shares the restless eclecticism of colleagues like John Zorn and Anthony Braxton, with a particular interest in the more painterly shades of contemporary Japanese classical music. What renders Rothenberg more approachable and, in the end, more significant than many of his peers is the serenity at the heart of his fiercest playing.” – Glen Hirshberg, LA Weekly
